Best Start Birth Center is the first state-licensed and nationally accredited, free-standing birth center in California! Best Start has been providing families the choice to give birth at California’s most experienced birth center for nearly three decades! Our focus is on family birthing. We believe birth is a celebration to be cherished, not a medical event.  Our birth center has comfortably decorated private birth suites with private attached bathrooms. Best Start features large tubs for water births and provides comfort measures for the laboring mom to promote effective labor. Best Start is the only licensed and nationally accredited birth center in the city of San Diego to offer water birth!

Our moms have given birth to over 5,000 babies at Best Start.  Our San Diego midwives specialize in pregnancy care that includes: free pregnancy testing, prenatal/birth/postpartum care, free breast feeding support, well-woman services, and contraceptive care/GYN care with Certified Nurse Midwives. When available we also offer volunteer doula support for moms who give birth in our birth center.

Our program uses Certified Nurse Midwives, Licensed Midwives, and Obstetricians to provide the medical attention that is so important to ensure healthy mothers and babies. In addition, we also offer hearing screens, Comprehensive Perinatal Services (CPSP), and Presumptive Medi-Cal. We also participate in the Paternity Opportunity Program, and are members of the perinatal care network. Best Start provides education and resources for natural childbirth, water birth, and lactation support. The birth center is organized to give women high quality choices, satisfying experiences, and healthy outcomes. We accept MediCal/AIM-MCAP and Tricare, to ensure we reach every woman needing our services.

*Prenatal care is also available for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) moms planning a natural hospital birth/delivery.
